Classroom Tour: Quiet Reading

This is our independent reading station which we call "Quiet Reading."  I use this as a station for almost all of my students (readers and non-readers).  As you can see on the bookshelf, each bin is labeled with a letter (reading levels).   For students who are reading at a guided reading level, their levels are posted on the right hand side of the book shelf.  The kids are responsible for picking a book at their level and reading it quietly to themselves.  There is a table right across from the shelf where students sit to read their books.

This is an example of what is posted on the right side of the book shelf.  It lists each student's name as well as appropriate reading levels for them to select books from.  I laminate this chart when it is blank, then use a dry erase marker to write in the current levels.  That way when kids reach a new level, you don't have to re-make the whole chart!

Part of the middle shelf also has a bin that has adapted books for my non-reading students to utilize. ( I need to get a larger bin and label it still!).  Each adapted book has a baggy of laminated pictures that go with the book.  As they turn each page, they are responsible for matching the correct picture to the page.  

The bottom shelf currently has puzzles stored in plastic Tupperware (these also still need a larger storage bin to fit in because they kind of look sloppy right now!).  When my kids finish reading their books, they can work on these puzzles until it is time to switch stations (since reading independently for 15 minutes is still quite challenging for most of my students).
