Bubble Painting: Pinterest Win or Fail?

I am obsessed with the site Pinterest Fail.  I think it is so funny seeing people's recipes/crafts from Pinterest turn out a total flop...I'm not saying that in a mean spirited way.... more from an "I've been there" kind of way.  When we did this painting with bubbles activity this week (which I found on Pinterest and is originally from Art is Basic), I wasn't sure whether we would have any luck.  The directions were minimal (put food coloring in bubbles and blow them at paper).  So I wasn't really sure how they would turn out.

I started this lesson by having the kids make a list of colors.  Then I showed them we only had 3 colors of food coloring (red, yellow, blue).  We discussed which colors we would have to mix together to get the other colors on our original brainstormed list.  We then began to create the bubble paint.   We put about 20 drops of food coloring into each bubble container to get a nice color to turn out.

Next, we set a bunch of white paper in the middle of the table.

I put a paper towel in from of each kid so they could wipe their sticky, colorful fingers whenever they wanted (most of my kids hate getting messy!).  These also caught some of the drips from the bubble containers which made clean up a bit easier.

Once our paper was set up, we started blowing bubbles.  Each kid got a different color, and then we rotated them around.

This project was a bit messy, so I would recommend wearing smocks or old t-shirts when you do it!  We were all covered in colors by the end since there is no controlling where the bubbles will go!  However, this activity did last 30 minutes and all of the kids in the group were occupied pretty much the entire time.

You decide Pinterest win or fail?  I'm still torn.
